"Justice" was the second attempt at a logo design
but soon took on meaning well beyond what I first had in mind. The eyes
covered by a blindfold is relevant to the "unseen" element in the name of our
gallery, Art Unseen. While in the process of creating this image outside
influences played a significant role in expanding it's relevance to my
life's experience.
For the past three years or so I have been in a court
battle with the Attorney General for the Province of Ontario's legal team who
represent the Ministry of Transportation for an alleged roadside incident.
Eventually I will post the whole story with all the relevant court documents
and information relating to it up on the web, either through my journal or a
page unto itself. It could prove useful to anyone else out there who
might find themselves in the legal trap set by the Ministry of Transportation
in order to snare unsuspecting drivers upon the Queen's Highways in Ontario.
For now I will say this, there is little justice to be had in the
system, for one who decides to take it on alone.
While working on
Justice my day in court came and went and that's when she took on a new
meaning. The blindfold was now representative of the blind which covers
the eyes of Lady Justice. As I understand it this symbol relates to the
law being blind and therefore should make no judgment through prejudice.
The drawing now represented for me the need for true justice not only in my
personal sphere but in our wider world.
Then November 2, 2004
(another Bush term, yee ha) came and went and justice was once again segregated to the back of the bus on
so called "moral" grounds. For more on this issue go to my
Journal.
Peter Tosh once
said, "there can be no peace without justice" and I tend to believe that he
was right. With this latest turn of events flying in the face of justice
I feel the need for all of us to fight in the best way we know how has now
taken on a profound importance.
The Owl (as is the
case in this piece) has always spoke to me of the ability and necessity
for night sight and silent flight. Perched on the shoulder of Justice it
sees the Truth no matter how dark the night might get for our collective
Souls. An interesting side note to the presence of this Owl is that it
literally came to visit shortly before I began work on Justice. Stefanie
spotted it perched in a tree not ten feet from our house in broad daylight.
We all went outside and watched it for quite some time from maybe a five foot
distance and it just hung around offering Stefanie a chance to capture it
digitally at close range. At one time it even swooped down to the ground
beside me grabbed a grasshopper went back to it's previous perch and proceeded
to have lunch.
